What is fishing? Origins and history

Definition of fishing

At Northpolevoyages, the largest information website about fishing, you will be able to learn, get to know and enjoy this recreational and commercial activity, which has served as a primary economic activity for hundreds of populations around the world. For those who do not know, the word fishing comes from the Latin “Piscis” which means fish, when we talk about the meaning of fishing we mean the action of fishing. It is the activity of hunting fish and other aquatic species, whether in the sea, rivers or reservoirs.

There are two modalities or types of fishing according to the type of water, sea or saltwater fishing or river or continental fishing when we refer to freshwaters. Fishing is an activity of the primary sector with thousands of years of antiquity and we can almost go back to the Prehistory, where already our ancestors practiced it as a means of sustenance and feeding.

There are samples of hooks made of shells back in the Pleistocene, which corroborate the use of more sophisticated gear than the simple human hand. We are a few thousand years ahead of the first century of our modern era, where, in Japanese lands in the Far East, a famous Japanese empress named Zingo made the first hook made of a needle, grains of rice as bait and thread from her clothes as line, being the origins of the sportfishing equipment we know today. Spears, bows, harpoons or arrows have also been found with evidence of the use of fishing tools.

What is fishing? All types, styles, and methods of fishing that exist

Fishing is an activity of the primary sector that is dedicated to catching mostly fish and other aquatic species. If it is practiced in freshwaters it is called continental or fluvial while if we refer to saltwater fishing we call it maritime. It is an art that has been with us for thousands of years and one of the primary economic activities worldwide. There are hundreds of fishing modalities, types, styles, techniques, forms, and arts.

When we talk about sport fishing we refer to the leisure and recreational activity that is practiced for pure pleasure or in sports competitions. Anglers enjoy this modality everywhere in the world, although these disciplines are governed by the law of each autonomous community to ensure the conservation of the fauna of our seas and rivers, whether by size, number of catches or fishing season. The autonomous and national sport fishing federations were created to manage the sportfishing competitions, for the organization, supervision, and arbitration of tournaments, contests, and championships at different levels, either from the boat or from the shore.

Characteristics of fishing activities

There are many styles of fishing, depending on the lures, types of fish and catching areas, sometimes it is said that there are as many styles as there are fishermen. The essential equipment is the rod and reel, in addition to the line and hooks. Later on, countless other fishing accessories may be incorporated.

The practice of sport fishing is usually done in the company and sometimes alone depending on the preferences of the angler and one or another fishing technique is used if we are going to be in freshwaters such as rivers, lagoons or reservoirs or in saltwater such as from the shore or in the open sea. When we refer to spinning fishing we are talking about the use of the reel with vertical coil and in case the reel has the coil in placed horizontally we will talk about baitcasting.

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) is the maximum world authority in charge of measuring and validating the records obtained by sport fishermen, an organization created in 1939 and currently based in Florida (USA). Due to the immensity of fishing terms and techniques, the IGFA was in charge of standardizing and regulating sport fishing in all its fields. In order to improve the conservation of species, this association promulgates the practice of catch and release of fish. The IGFA annually lists the records achieved by those beginner or professional fishermen who follow its rules and regulations, these appointments have much prestige within this world.

Within the sport fishing, we find other subdivisions, we refer to the fluvial or continental fishing, that one of the freshwaters (rivers, lagoons, lakes, reservoirs, ponds or lagoons), the most famous is the fly fishing style. Saltwater or sea fishing is done from jetties, beaches, shores or from boats, even from kayaks. As we fishermen say, there are as many styles of fishing as there are fishermen, it also depends on the area and the fish we are going to catch, in the end, the fish are the ones that rule when choosing the fishing technique, below we have the most representative styles.

Fishing types and methods

There are innumerable forms and types of fishing, both in saltwater and in river waters, which is why a classification has been made to better understand and comprehend how we can classify all the types of fishing that we can find, either by taking into account the place where it is practiced, the volume and purpose of the catches, the material and equipment with which it will be done, the fishing techniques used and many more characteristics that this noble art can offer us. As a summary, we can classify the different types of fishing in:

Types of fishing according to the volume of catches

  • Industrial or commercial fishing
  • Subsistence
  • Place

Types of fishing according to the material with which it is fished:

  • Angling
  • With thread
  • With networks
  • Spearfishing
  • Hand fishing
  • By means of traps
  • With animals

Types of fishing according to the purpose and use:

  • Sportfishing
  • Food
  • Ornamental

Fishing types according to location:

  • Sea fishing
  • River or river fishing
  • Lake fishing

Spinning fishing

Spinning fishing

This type is based on casting and retrieving, the angler makes the cast with the spinning rod and retrieves the lure by making different dragging movements, changing the speed, depth or zigzagging of the artificial one to get our potential catch to bite. There are both sea and river spinning lures. It is worth mentioning that the material to be used is extremely light, both in rods and in reels, so that it is easier to handle.

The spinning rods for freshwater are approximately 1.70 m long, and for spinning fishing in saltwater we will use rods from 3 to 3.30 meters long. For the correct practice of spinning, we must use specific materials for this modality, both in lures and in lines and threads.

Fishing Jigging

Fishing jigging

Undoubtedly, one of the most demanding styles, also known as vertical fishing, is of Japanese origin and in the last few years, thousands of anglers have switched to this exciting sport. Jigging fishing is done with leaded head lures, dropping them to the bottom of the sea from our boat, in the form of tugs we pick up the lure with our jigging rod imitating a fish swimming towards the surface.

Vertical fishing is extremely suitable to catch large predators and dentexes. In order to have a better command of this technique, it is interesting to try different pulls, being long or short, fast or more spaced in time to be able to determine which one gives us better results. Regarding the material for jigging, we must say that both the reel and the rod should be balanced in weight and power and should be proportional to the type of catch we will catch.

Carpfishing

Carpfishing

Carpfishing originated in England, is a type of fishing that focuses on catching large carp, the purpose of this mode is to catch and release the species caught. Fishing without death is a maxim to be fulfilled if we want to carry out carpfishing correctly. The concept of carpfishing or carp fishing consists of the difference of the assembly of the gear that it uses, in the tip of the hook the bait is nailed leaving the hook completely uncovered making the nailing in the mouth of the fish more propitious.

We know that carp do not bite their prey but feed by sucking their prey, so this type of assembly is ideal for catching this type of fish. For carp fishing we will use boilies, pellets or tigernut (a mixture of both), these are very effective types of baits for carp.

Boilie

These baits have the shape of a sphere, its composition is basically several types of flour mixed with egg and boiled. It is convenient to let these spheres rest and dry 1 or 2 days after being cooked so that they gain consistency and hardness. The harder the boilies are, the more suitable they will be for bigger carp.

Pellets

Like the boilies, they are composed of flours, although the pellets progressively crumble when they are underwater, it is also possible to give them different sizes and flavors.

Casting

Surfcasting

The sport fishing called casting uses powerful rods to cast from the shore to the lures, the casting rods measure between 3.50 and 8 meters long, the actions and the thickness of these rods are also high to be able to catch good big preys, for example, pike.

In addition to knowing and mastering the casting technique, it is also important to know the conditions of the water, the fishing locations, the weather and the behavior of the fish according to the season, a whole range of factors that only with the experience we will be able to master.

Casting is the technique used to cast the lure into the water. This bait stays on the surface or goes down to the bottom, depending on whether it is with ballast or not, and it stays in the landing position until the fish falls into its range.

Fly fishing

Fly Fishing

This sport technique is done with flies. It is a very spectacular style of fishing in the cast since this is done in the form of a whip transmitting from the rod, through the line to the fly, the strength of our cast.

The type of fishing line is very important since the movement of the fly will depend on it. This lure is an imitation of insects that normally inhabit the continental waters; they can be dry insects, drowned insects, pupae or nymphs.

The fly fishing rods are lightweight and very flexible for better handling. Their lengths vary between 2 and 3.5 meters, the most used construction materials are fiberglass, epoxy or currently medium or high range rods in carbon fiber. Its actions can be fast, medium or slow, depending on the bend the rod takes by bending it from the tip.

It consists of three phases: the first step is to cast backward, the second step is the so-called pause, and the final step is the forward cast. In order to achieve a longer distance, we must increase the pause time. Without a doubt, being an expert in this technique is a challenge for any angler.

We can differentiate in fly fishing different types and uses of flies:

Dry fly

The grace of this type of lure is that it stays right on the surface of the water imitating the insects of this type. To achieve this effect, the dry flies are made with feathers and materials with high buoyancy.

Nymph fly

These flies want to look like fly larvae when they are underwater. In order to get the nymphs to sink, they are built with a smaller number of floating feathers and a small lead is placed on them.

Fly streamer

Ideal for trout, since these flies imitate the fish’s own food. The streamers take the form of crustaceans or small fish.

Boat fishing and trolling

Boat fishing

We refer to a modality that is carried out from a boat or a ship in search of large sea monsters using very powerful and strong rods and reels. The rods are short and have a roller or washer shaped pointer and the reels contain large amounts of nylon thread.

Trolling is a sport style based on dragging an artificial lure from the boat while sailing on the sea or lakes. These exciters or gliders swim on the surface or mid-bottom, the depth is given by a steel ball that is placed in the line, so the lure will attract with its movement large marine prey. It is common to use large-caliber fishing rods to be able to fight with fish of considerable size, regarding their length they vary between 2 and 3 meters at the most.

The artificial one is hooked with the line and with the boat or craft sailing, we let the sample fall into the water until it moves away from a considerable distance, approximately 50 meters from the boat, that is when we prevent the line from running making the glider “dance” producing some attractive vibrations. It is usual that fishing on board is done by 3 anglers, two of them use the trolling style and another one from the front of the boat, the bow, fishes by spinning for example.

The boat driver controls the speed of the boat so that the trolling lures are kept at an adequate distance and avoid entanglement and hooking with the bottom. However, when the fish bites, the boat must be stopped even if the engine is stopped.

Bottom Fishing

It is a sport fishing modality that can provide us with very calm and relaxing days or days in which we must pay special attention and put our maximum concentration. Its quite simple style in its general part, since it consists of organizing a cable in our fishing line and dropping it to the bottom and waiting for the fish to bite. Ideal for deep sea fishing in places with calm waters, such as lakes, reservoirs, swamps, and rivers with little current. At first glance, it seems very easy but like everything in fishing, appearances are deceiving, and deep-sea fishing requires, as in other disciplines, a technique and skill of its own, both when priming our hooks, throwing the rod or choosing the right area.

If we want to spend a quiet time, think about the things in life and not be very attentive to what is being cooked in the water, this is a good alternative, it will simply be enough to put a bell or bell to warn us of any possible sting and while we can rest peacefully. But if we want to give the maximum to the fishing day, we should pay maximum attention to the movements of the tip of the fishing rod that will warn us that a fish has chopped the hook, we can even predict this by observing the waves or bubbles of water that they appear around the entrance of the thread, all attention is little.

The bottom fishing rods will have a length of between 3 and 4 and a half meters in length, being strong and thick for greater resistance, in some areas we can use two rods at the same time in our post, especially in places where they live the cyprinids.

Freehand fishing

Also known as floating or cork fishing, this style requires less equipment for its practice, we will use telescopic rods of considerable length, thread and a buoy or float that will serve as an indicator when the fish bite our lure. The angler must know the behavior of our buoy to recognize the type of species that has bitten because depending on each fish the float will move differently even depending on the size of the catch.

The buoy tends to sink totally or partially, turn on itself, etc. Free-hand fishing is widely practiced in tournaments and fishing competitions as it requires great skill and its success depends much on the hand of the fisherman. We can use naked telescopic pulse rods from 3 meters to even 8 or 9 meters long. Among the buoys used, we can find the sliding floats, running buoys or fixed weather vanes, the most experienced fishermen make their own floats to their liking both in shape and color.

Al coup

Coup fishing is a style that started in France as a sport discipline, based on the use of telescopic or plug-in rods without rings, the fishing line goes directly on the coup rod and it is not necessary to use a reel. Fishermen from all over the world achieve numerous catches with this type of fishing, although the size of the fish is relatively smaller as we do not have the strength of the reel.

English

It is a variety of the fishing to the coup, being as its name indicates original of England, its main differences are that they are used rods of smaller size and these without having rings, in addition, the reel if it is of obligatory use. The most important thing in English style fishing is speed, the angler must keep the tension of the line as much as possible to feel the bite and go to the fishing spot as soon as possible. The length of the rods is between 3.80 and 4.20 meters, we will use a buoy or long and thin cork in the form of a torpedo, joining it with a swivel to the thread from its tip.

The weather vane is sometimes weighted with weights to reach longer distances in the casts and to make the rig more balanced. Thanks to the advance in the construction of the materials to go fishing, we can use lighter and resistant rods with low of line and heavier rigs without getting to notice an imbalance in our equipment.

The English style rods have a longer blank or holding area than the other coup rods since we will need a strong cast using both hands as a lever to get the maximum number of meters possible. Another advantage that has this model is the great variety and wide range of possibilities available in the assembly of rigging, between buoys of different sizes and weights, with or without lead, very different diameters, between 0.12 and 0.30 mm in diameter and so on.

Furthermore, the practice of the English technique can be carried out in a wide range of conditions, both in the river and maritime waters, lakes, rivers, reservoirs, swamps or the sea. It is undoubtedly one of the most versatile styles that exist.

Bolognese

Also known as the fishing of the bream at a buoy, the Bolognese style consists basically like the previous ones, in the use of a weather vane or buoy to mark the point where we locate the strike. The weathercocks used are double-braced, giving us the information about how deep we are fishing by marking the length of the gear. The assembly of the bass line is very varied. For the Bolognese style, we must use rods up to 12 meters long, always carbon fiber telescopic to favor their lightness and transport, the use of reels in sports competitions is allowed.

The size of the bolognese reel will depend on the weight of the catches and the fishing line we are using, for example, a capacity of 100 meters for 0.30 mm lines would be correct, having a balanced team is undoubtedly a guarantee of success. The weather vanes can be from 0.5 grams to 15 grams floats for strong currents. The Bolognese is more practiced in inland waters because they are quieter areas with less current.

Baitcasting

The baitcasting is a style of sport fishing similar to spinning, thanks to the nature of the equipment used in this type of fishing discipline, we can achieve greater accuracy and speed in our sets and therefore greater efficiency in our fishing days. One of the advantages we have with baitcasting is that we can stop the artificial one before it falls into the water by means of a brake located in the casting reel. This way, the lure will fall more slowly and naturally than if we were spinning it.

These equipments do that we do not have to open the pick up of the reel before casting since with the rod and the reel of baitcasting we will be able to cast of any position and angle only with raising our thumb of the safety that possesses the reel, with the time and the practice we will be able to obtain major number of casts in minor time, even realizing them with only one hand. The baitcasting rods have a length between 1.80 and 3 meters approximately.

Fishing to surfcasting

Surfcasting - Northpolevoyages.com

Surfcasting is a style of fishing that is mainly done from the shores of the beaches and coasts. It is one of the most popular modalities, both for beginners and for tournaments and sports competitions.

The casting or surfcasting has multiple zones of action, it can be from docks, beaches, breakwaters, always looking for places where the bottom is sandy, there are other variants such as surf-fishing using light equipment and weights. These weights will be from 80 to 200 grams to be considered light casts, and for the so-called fish casts, we will use weights of up to 300 grams for the lead.

It is a very demanded modality in the tournaments and sport competitions, every day more adepts are added to this style still knowing that it can get to be very hard if we count on the climatological factors, mainly the wind, although really the surfcasting is exciting thanks to which we can obtain great captures of several kilos of weight for almost all the species, like for example, sea bass, gilded, sergeant, etc.

Most of the surfcasting rods are of three pluggable sections of carbon fiber, medium or high range, weights of 80 to 300 grams, we will use hooks or gameta for the bass and the mother or primary line, in the gameta will be placed the bait, for example, live fishing baits type worms, American, Korean, titas, etc. Telescopic surfcasting rods are gaining acceptance due to their somewhat cheaper price and similar handling than plug-in rods.

May

It is a sports technique called also fishing to the touch, for a correct practice of May we must know that we will use neither leads nor floats, but we will use our finger as a sensor of any pull that we can perceive from the sunken bait, passing through the thread until we reach In our hands, the line will have to be as tense as possible to increase the vibrations when a fish bites. The May or Tiento is very useful for catching small fish with good visibility bottoms.

Other types of sport fishing

It is possible to find other types or modalities of sport fishing, such as:

  • Popping
  • Rockfishing
  • Tropical fishing
  • Feeder fishing
  • Eging or squid fishing
  • Al legering
  • To the chamberlain or the live

Many of these forms are variations of others by changing some particularity in the material to be used or the type of fish we are going to catch.

Sports Fishing Equipment

Basic fishing equipment consists of a fishing rod, reel, fishing line or line, hooks, and lure or sample, which can be artificial or live bait, in short, this is the minimum material we must have to be able to Perform this activity correctly and with a guarantee of success.

Fishing rod

Fishing rod

When talking about fishing rods we can distinguish them by their length that is very varied, between 1.60 m to more than 8-9 meters, the reel is attached to the rod by its lower part in the so-called reel holder, depending on the action or resistance that the rod has, we can cast the lure to greater or lesser distance.

The material used to manufacture the lures ranges from the most primitive ones made of bamboo to those made of glass fiber or epoxy, to the most modern and sophisticated ones made of carbon fiber, highly resistant to torsion.

Depending on their resistance, we classify the fishing rods by light action, used for capturing with small baits or lures, going through medium action usually used in rivers to the strong or heavy action more suitable for practice in the sea with large catches.

Fishing Reels

Fishing Reels

The fishing reels through its mechanism allows to let out the fishing line through its spool and recover it by operating its crank, thanks to the brake that is incorporated, the fishing reels can be front or rear brake, the line maintains the tension controlled by the fisherman and thus playing with the action of the rod and the tension of the reel we can get to perform the fishing successfully.

The reels are undoubtedly one of the most important parts in the equipment of angling since many factors such as size and weight depend on them for perfect synchronization with their corresponding rod, so knowing this element perfectly becomes of vital importance when we want to go into this wonderful sport.

Fishing line

Fishing line

This is wound on the spool of the reel, the thread or pile can be made of monofilament or various multifilaments, such as Dyneema, spectra, or nylon. The qualities that must have the threads of fishing are the diameter, resistance, and memory.

The diameter and resistance are closely related and the memory effect is the capacity that the thread has to maintain its length after being used, the less memory effect the better.

It is true that in the world of lines there is an infinite amount of information that sometimes overwhelms us. Here we will try to shed light on all the doubts that may arise and recommend newly tested products so that we all know even more about all the fishing equipment.

Artificial lures

Artificial lures

The lures or artificial samples are a part of the fundamental fishing equipment since they are the ones that awaken the interest or not of the fish. There are 3 different types of samples, the lures that imitate the fishes themselves, which faithfully reflect the characteristics that we find in nature, another type is the emulators, which preserve similar features without being identical to the fishes, and finally, the attractors, whose main virtue is to emulate attractive movements without having natural features.

The fishing lures have several hooks in their bodies to capture the prey and the most used construction materials are balsa wood, (from the mythical Rapala) metal or plastic. The main feature of Rapala lures’ success is that their movement resembles a wounded fish, being very attractive to the predator.

Each fishing style and fish to be caught will require different lures:

Minnows

This lure is shaped like a fish and has a plastic or metal piece under the head called a bib. Thanks to this lip, the minnow is able to make zigzag movements under the water surface. The swimming depth depends on the minnow’s weight.

Walkers or poppers

The use of this type of lure depends a lot on the skill of the fisherman to give the characteristic movement of injured or dying fish that poppers have, they are usually used for predators thanks to the vibrations they produce on the water surface and are effective both at sea and in river fishing.

Spoons

Thanks to the dragging that the angler makes with this lure through the water, this type of sample turns and waves on itself producing vibrations that attract different species of fish. They are used both in surface and in little depth and are very effective in continental fishing.

Jigs and vinyls

The fishing vinyls can be hard or soft, if the lure is hard the material used for its construction is plastic, lead or metal, while for the soft vinyls a kind of silicone of different colors is used. The secret of the effectiveness of this material undoubtedly lies in the skill of the angler to apply one or another movement to the jigs or vinyls in order to attract his prey.

Gliders or Exciters

Very useful for trolling, the ideal is to use these exciters for trolling, thus imitating the movement of the prey of the large predators of the sea. These lures are usually of considerable size.

Jibioneras or little birds

Suitable for catching cephalopods, including squid, cuttlefish, octopus, cuttlefish, etc. with its torpedo shape attract these invertebrates from the sea, there are also shrimp-shaped and even fluorescent cuttlefish, everything depends on the taste of the fisherman.

Hooks

Hooks

They are small pieces of metal in the shape of a hook whose main function is to retain the fish and be able to fish it. They are usually made of stainless steel, much more resistant to wear and tear and corrosion by natural agents such as sea salt.

The main parts of the hook are the ring, paddle or eyelet, to tie the thread, the neck or leg, which is the length of the fishing hook, can be short or long leg depending on its length, the curve, the beard or death, which sometimes the model lacks death and finally the tip, which the latest models come with chemically sharpened tips for greater insertion into the prey and greater durability.

The first hooks created by human beings were made of materials such as animal bones, shells, iron or bronze. We must think about the size of the catch we want to obtain in order to choose the size and shape of the hook. If we go to the sea, the best thing is to choose hooks that are corrosion resistant and made of stainless steel.

Industrial or commercial fishing

Industrial fishing boat

When we talk about industrial or commercial fishing, we are referring more to the vision of the economy, therefore with a solely lucrative interest on the part of the fishermen, and depending on the distance from the coast at which it is carried out, they can be called: inshore, offshore or deep-sea. This practice must be legally regulated by the different state bodies and by the different administrations that deal with this type of competence.

We should know that in commercial fishing we can highlight the artisanal and industrial depending on the economic purpose that they are appropriate. In certain areas, there are still craft processes in fishing as in the past and in most countries, the industrialization of this process has been imposed.

This activity has been developed mainly with the purpose of searching for food, due to the increase of the world population and the growth of fish consumption, there has been an overexploitation using techniques that are not very conscious with the environment, being these methods of great volume of captures and low cost wanting to increase the productivity industrializing the sector.

The great growth of fish catches, both inland, and marine, has meant a decrease in the population, and experts even predict the disappearance of certain species, affecting the entire aquatic food chain. Due to this problem caused by human predation in the aquatic environment, laws and regulations were created to conserve the aquatic fauna and flora of intensive fishing activity, although these limits have not been completely effective since in many areas the legislation is not strictly complied with.

To promote industrial fishing out of control, fish farms have been created to carry out the entire process of breeding, maturing and catching species with high food and culinary value, thus reducing uncontrolled depredation of the seas and rivers.

This should not be necessary if the fishing companies do not use massive extraction methods and do not over-exploit the underwater and coastal bottoms, because of the trawling technique that depletes the underwater bottoms, taking with it any species that is found in its way, devastating the habitat of hundreds of fish that inhabit the ocean floors. These consequences are generated by poorly practiced commercial fishing breaking the balance of the aquatic ecosystem. The use of more selective methods is recommended, eliminating the practice of trawling altogether.

Industrial fishing

When we talk about the commercial type called industrial we have to take into account a fundamental factor, more catches at the lowest possible price. Bearing this in mind it is easy to imagine that the methods used are not usually very selective since when we include the economic part in the fishing formula many other factors are relegated to second place.

To be able to carry out the industrial fishing activity it is necessary to equip the fishing boats and cows to have a maximum yield, in addition, the port areas must be prepared for the reception and distribution of the catches. Vessels operating in areas close to the coast are the coastal ones, they are relatively small and they leave and return to port on the same day. Today these boats do not usually bring in large quantities of catches because the waters are becoming increasingly scarce of fish.

Deep-sea fishing boats are those that work long distances from the coast and do not return to port for weeks or even months. They are large in size and are equipped with high technology for the extraction of fish, such as radars, probes, sonars and multifunction equipment to detect schools of fish that swim in more inaccessible places.

Industrial deep-sea fishing is a leading industry in countries such as Japan and Russia, which have large fishing fleets and a long tradition of fish consumption. The fuel consumption generated worldwide is between 15 and 20 million tons, a very negative factor at the ecological level, in addition to this we must add the immense amount of waste and scrap that are abandoned at sea because of the non-use of selective methods, which the artisanal style, however, takes into account.

Almadraba

A technique used in commercial fishing for tuna practiced mainly in Andalusia, Valencia, Murcia even in Ceuta, fishermen in these areas know the migration of tuna from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and vice versa to fish these large marine predators. The trap is a labyrinthine system of nets that are placed in the area of passage of these large tuna near the coast.

This art is quite simple, two boats are placed parallel to each other leaving a distance of their own to place a shallow net that is held by a long line where they will collect the tunas that come in transit, is a craft style and selective as the pieces that are not considered suitable for their size or other circumstances are discarded and returned to sea alive. Tuna weighing more than 200 kilos can be caught and the extraction and handling of these large predators can be dangerous, so fishermen who practice the trap must be very experienced.

Enchanted

is artisanal fishing art has a tradition in the areas of San Pedro del Pinatar and San Javier in the Mar Menor (Murcia) taking advantage of the migrations of some fish in the coastal lagoons. Labyrinths made of nets and rods in the form of circles are placed in the encased so that the fish can enter but not leave, it is a truly ancestral art (practiced by the Arabs) as well as selective. Sailing boats usually use sailboats and the most common catches are corn or gilthead, even some soles or mullet.

Fish the brumeo

Commercial height, its main characteristics is that its practice is carried out at sea and at great depths using live baitfish bait. When the brumeo is carried out, they usually capture, in addition to their main species, tuna, other catches of smaller size and weight that are very attractive in the market. Very strong and resistant material is used both in rods and reels of high range and great power, it is also practiced by sport fishermen who seek strong emotions and titanic struggles with the great sea monsters.

At the fence

The commercial practice of the encirclement consists of cornering or fencing the banks generally of anchovies, sardines or horse mackerels (usually species that swim on the surface or shallow) between a fishing vessel and a small panga or boat with a large power outboard motor, releasing a net and making a circle around the fish to fence them.

These purse seines are of great capacity and can measure up to 1000 meters long and about 50 meters wide, the purse seine net has the peculiarity that when passing the schools or school of fish it closes leaving them enclosed.

The purse seine fishing is carried out in different areas, therefore the mobility of the fishing boats must be large, the traiñas look for fish banks with powerful localization devices. For winter times, the boats or purse-seines seek their catches closer to the coast due to the poor state of the sea.

Longline

The longline is a rig used by artisanal fishermen, there are two types of longlines, the bottom that is located on the seafloor and the surface, longline that is floating in the water. To fish with longlines we must know that this rig contains a mother line that branches into other lines that contain the hooks, these are the size indicated depending on the type of catches we want to obtain. This art is normally used for cod or hake.

The longline or surface longline attracts fish with a central line over 80 kilometers long and is provided with thousands of hooks, with sizes that vary depending on the type of fish we are going to catch. This central line is chained with smaller lines of baited hooks, which hang at spaced intervals. These primed hooks join the longline, with short lines called armholes that hang outside the mainline or mother line. Longlines are fixed horizontally either on the seafloor (bottom longline) or near the surface of the water (pelagic longlines). It is a type of industrial fishing.

To the chamberlain

Chamber fishing from a boat is one of the types that involves attracting the fish to a specific catch area using the famous “engodo”. Chamber fishing can be done at different depths. When we make the chamber at a low depth and low tide, the engodo will be thrown directly into the sea. Otherwise, if we catch the chamber with greater depth or strong current, we will need the use of an anchored bag.

The engodo is formed by a kind of bag where the odors come out without the bait coming out, this bag contains a ballast so that it stays at the bottom and a rope attached to the boat. Bait or engodo can consist of many ingredients according to the “chef” that forms it, they can usually carry

  • Sardines
  • Mackerel
  • Sawdust
  • Veal liver
  • Sand

Trawling

In the industrial model, it is very typical the use of the trawl nets that are placed in the bottom of the sea to go dragging everything that finds in its path. Without a doubt, this involves an intensive shearing of the sea beds and must be eradicated, in fact, it is prohibited in practically all the world.

The ships that use these nets cause a strong imbalance at the ecological level even damaging the ozone layer due to the carbon that is released when removing the aquatic soils, it is important to know that the marine soils have a lower capacity of recovery than the terrestrial ones, therefore the total elimination of the trawling form must be immediate.

Underwater fishing

Underwater fishing

The first news that we can document that underwater fishing in apnea was carried out as a sport, does not lead to France, that is where it all began, at first it was just a game between men challenging each other, but all this later triggered a way of living, thinking and seeing life underwater.

Besides the French beginnings, Spain also contributed its grain of sand and represented great importance in the development of this sport discipline so practiced by hundreds of divers today. It all started on the Costa Brava (thanks to the contact with France through the Mediterranean) and little by little it was extended and extended to the rest of the country.

Thanks to the 1929 Expo, a Japanese man named “Tokumori” arrived in Barcelona and caused a sensation due to his “artisan” and peculiar way of fishing completely submerged in the water, at least he had not been seen before.

This intrepid sportsman was unwittingly giving us some guidelines to follow on what would later become what we know today as underwater fishing. His method and technique consisted of putting on Fernez binoculars and a harpoon on the end made of a bamboo rod, a revolutionary who guided and initiated the steps of hundreds of divers and underwater fishing who saw him as a reference.
